Arlo’s Nursery

Our house has been through a lot of transformations throughout the years, but this nursery was by far my favorite to put together. When my husband and I first moved into our house three years ago, we knew that when it was time, this was going to be our baby’s room. First it was a guest room. Then we got rid of the furniture and we used the room for storage. Now that it’s a nursery, it’s by far my favorite room in the house.

When I fell pregnant, we planned on waiting until birth to find out the sex of our baby. But halfway through my pregnancy, we got impatient and found out we were having a little boy during the 20 week scan. Prior to the scan, I had already spent quite a bit of time pinning inspiration for the baby’s room and planned for it to be gender-neutral. I knew I would be spending a lot of time in this room nursing, playing, and reading with Arlo so I wanted the room to be aesthetic and calming. We stuck with the gender-neutral idea and made the room light and bright, with some warmth to it.

We started with the paint and got eight different samples of varying white colored paints. I put the swatches on the wall and stared at them for three weeks before choosing Crème Fraiche by Benjamin Moore. Who knew it would be so hard to pick the perfect shade of white! In our house, this paint color is the perfect shade of white—it doesn’t have yellow, pink, or blue undertones.

Next we bought “the big three”—the crib, dresser, and chair. I chose the Babyletto Lolly 3-in-1 Convertible Crib because it checked all of the boxes. I wanted the furniture to be white but also have natural elements. I also needed a crib that I can reach into, since I stand at 5’0”. With the 3-in-1 element, we’ll get lots of use out of it since it transforms into a bed.

The dresser is Babyletto Gelato. I wanted a small dresser since the room isn’t that big and I didn’t want it to be the main focus. We use the closet for most of the clothes storage, just keeping the necessities in the dresser. The Gelato is cute and does the job, but to be honest, this dresser isn’t my favorite. I chased after the IKEA Bjorksnas Dresser, but it’s (still) sold out in my area. I thought the Babyletto Gelato would match the crib better, but it’s completely different wood color. I couldn’t return the dresser, but if I could go back, I would’ve gone with dresser from the Babyletto Lolly collection.

I wanted a chair that rocks, but without the look of a rocking chair. I went with the Babyletto Madison Swivel Chair in the color Ecru. It is made of microsuede and has a very clean, modern look to it. If you’re thinking “A white fabric chair in a baby’s room?”—don’t worry I thought the same thing. It claims to be stain and water resistant so we will see how that holds up over time. I dressed the chair up with a throw pillow from Target (linked similar) and the Sundown muslin quilt from Brixton Phoenix.

Once I had “the big three” in the room, I could see my vision coming together. I slowly added decor and some color. My favorite decoration in the room is the custom macrame wall hanging by Nikole Dominique. I let her have full creative control and the outcome came out better than I could have ever imagined. Another favorite is the book nook. I got the shelves from IKEA and filled them with the books that were gifted to Arlo at my baby shower.

In the last few weeks of my pregnancy, I was in full nesting mode. I washed, folded, and hung all of the baby clothes, organized all the diapers by size, and wiped down all of the toys. I was so excited to be done with the nursery because our house now felt complete. Little did I know, we needed Arlo in our arms for it to truly feel like home. Over the last couple months, I’ve cherished the many hours nursing Arlo and playing and reading with him in his room. I am so excited for the many memories that will be made here.
